About The Bunker
The Bunker aims to develop music and arts in the City of Sunderland. They provide a creative outlet for youth in Sunderland and contribute significantly to the North East region’s cultural economy. They engage hard to reach learners and run music related projects for people who may otherwise not consider education/training as a route to employment. They aim to provide advice and support to build confidence and help people use music towards a positive outcome, whether this results in a career in the arts or other vocations.

Singing Club make us proud!
What is Singing Club?
If you don't already know who singing club are, then we must educate you...
They are a group of 8-17 year olds who come to The Bunker to sing their favourite songs and learn harmonies. The Singing Club has been running for 2 years and have performed at Our Big Gig and even recorded songs at The Bunker!
Why have they made us proud?
They wanted to raise money for a trip to light water valley as a treat for all the hard work they put into their performing and singing, so they decided to have their very own gig at Louis Café on Park Lane. By busking in town and selling their own CDs, they managed to raise enough money for their trip! They enjoyed themselves so much that they are even looking into putting more of their own gigs and little busking shows on soon!
We are so proud of them! Well Done to The Bunker Singing Club!

Summer Streets
What we did...
We were involved with Summer Streets again this year, doing djembe workshops! They were (we like to think) the MOST popular workshop running on the Saturday, we even had to turn people away because we had no space left in our tent!
Cultural Spring
If you haven't heard of it, Summer Streets is a community music festival caters for many tastes. The Cultural Spring is an exciting, ambitious project to get more people in Sunderland and South Tyneside to experience and be inspired by the arts.

Music Therapy Week
What is Music Therapy Week?
Music Therapy Week is a great opportunity to promote music therapy in your local area. However, it also provides a valuable opportunity to develop a greater level of understanding of what music therapy is, how it works and what the potential benefits of music therapy are.
What are we doing?
The Bunker work within various aspects of the community, doing music workshops, to help people use music towards a positive outcome.
We are currently working with Seafarers Way, who provide accommodation for people living with Alzheimer's and Dementia. During this project we have used music as a therapy to try to recover their memories and also to build skills that they may have lost.
We also work with people living with Arthritis and provide guitar and drumming workshops to help them improve their motor skills; while also learning the skills involved with their chosen instrument. John (pictured below) is now one of our star learners with Arthritis and is picking up the art of drumming very quickly and even managing to play for the hour session with very little pain!
Workshops Galore...
Thornhill School
Last week, we had Thornhill school in for a day of DJ and production. They had such a great time that they have come back for more this week!! But, I mean who wouldn't if you were playing with this keyboard?
Seafarers Way
We also had another trip to Seafarers Way to deliver a music workshop to the people living there, they thoroughly enjoyed their game of musical hangman and even asked us back to perform at an open day on the 26/06/15!
Working with the stars!
Olivia Lawson
You will all know Olivia from the popular TV programme, The Voice. Well, we have been working alongside her, supporting her all the way and even recording some songs for her, we are very excited to let you listen to a recording of her very own song!! if you would like to listen, click here...

The Judges' Verdict...
Centre Point's Got Talent
Centrepoint are dedicated to providing accommodation for young people aged between 16-25 to get back into education, employment and training. They give them a chance to turn their lives around, build firm foundations, and prepare for a future where they realise their potential. They support over 8,400 young people a year in London and the North East.
They wanted to host an event to raise awareness of the work they do, working with The Bunker, they created 'Centre Point's Got Talent'. This event was dedicated to showcasing the talent that the young people at Centre Point had, this ranged from dancing to spoken word; at the end of the night, the judges decided upon one act. This act was a wonderful freestyle dancer who:
"Let his thoughts, feelings and emotions flow into his moves."

TAG Team
Together Activity Group
The Together Activity Group (TAG) is a new project started by Sunderland College to create more opportunities for students from all backgrounds. The aim of TAG is to help reduce the isolation of individuals, improve the physical health and emotional well-being of individuals and increase the employability of volunteers through training and work experience.
The Bunker
It was highlighted to us, that TAG wanted the young people they work with to be involved in some musical activities. To help with this, we have been running a workshop at Bede College to involve young people in learning how to play different types of instruments including guitars and djembes. Through these workshops, the students have developed new skills, worked as a team and built bonds with our members of staff they have worked with.
"The workshops delivered were a huge success and all participants were keen and excited to join in with the activities. Thus providing a warm and pleasant atmosphere."
