About The Bunker

The Bunker aims to develop music and arts in the City of Sunderland. They provide a creative outlet for youth in Sunderland and contribute significantly to the North East region’s cultural economy. They engage hard to reach learners and run music related projects for people who may otherwise not consider education/training as a route to employment. They aim to provide advice and support to build confidence and help people use music towards a positive outcome, whether this results in a career in the arts or other vocations.

Music Therapy Week

What is Music Therapy Week?

Music Therapy Week is a great opportunity to promote music therapy in your local area. However, it also provides a valuable opportunity to develop a greater level of understanding of what music therapy is, how it works and what the potential benefits of music therapy are.

What are we doing?

The Bunker work within various aspects of the community, doing music workshops, to help people use music towards a positive outcome.

We are currently working with Seafarers Way, who provide accommodation for people living with Alzheimer's and Dementia. During this project we have used music as a therapy to try to recover their memories and also to build skills that they may have lost.

We also work with people living with Arthritis and provide guitar and drumming workshops to help them improve their motor skills; while also learning the skills involved with their chosen instrument. John (pictured below) is now one of our star learners with Arthritis and is picking up the art of drumming very quickly and even managing to play for the hour session with very little pain!

"John couldn’t even hold a pen let alone master the art of the drum sticks!"
